Olalekan Soetan, yesterday, won the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) South-West Zonal Election, securing three votes to clinch the position ahead of two other contestants.
In Benin City, Edo State, a former sprinter and athletics coach, Gabriel Okon, picked the South-South zone’s ticket ahead of Itiako Ikpokpo, whom he beat 4-2.
Soetan, who hails from Ogun State, but currently serves in Oyo State, triumphed in the AFN zonal election held in Ibadan over fellow Ogun State indigenes, Mr. Babajide John Odedeji, and Chief Gbenga Abijo, who received two votes and one vote respectively.
The election was conducted by delegates representing the six southwestern states, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti, under the supervision of Coach Emilia Oyase, the designated electoral official.
Present at the election were key stakeholders including Mrs. Evelyn Fabunmi, the South-West Zonal Coordinator of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mr. Gbenga Omoyeni, and Mr. Olowe Seun, who represented the NSC South-West zone.
The election that produced Okon as the South-South zone representative in Benin City was attended by delegates from Delta, Rivers State, Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
Results from the North-Central, North-West, North-East, and South-East zones are expected today.
