Sportsmen and women in Imo State and its environs will today in Mbaise gather for the maiden merit awards, which is aimed at honouring legends, who have contributed to the fight against drug abuse and other vices.

Organised by Silvernews Communication, the award will hold at Paragon Hotel, Eke Nguru, with 2o honorees billed to receive certificates of merit.

Explaining the rationale for the awards, Silvernews Communications CEO, Kennedy Onwunali, said, “it is long overdue to recognise Mbaise sports personalities and some of their friends, who have contributed to sports development.”

Onwunali disclosed the event will be chaired by Prince Emeka Ogodudu, while organising committee is headed by Chief Ugochukwu-Udoku.

He said: “This will be a yearly event to celebrate the best sports personalities in the area.

“Personlaities like ACP Chioma Ajunwa Opara, Late Eze B.S.C Nzenwa, Coach Uche Eucharia, Coach Alphonsus Dike, Coach Isaac Nnado, Coach Ndubuisi Nduka, Chief Ben Isiguzo, Dr. Jude Amadi, Prof. Eddie Oparaoji and Late Rev. Fr. Charles Anyanwu ard among the awardees.

“Others are Rev. Fr. Magnus Ebere, Dr. Kachi Nwoga, Dorothy Nwawudu, Mr. Chigozie Nwagu, Prince Emeka Ogodudu, Mrs. Sabina Chikere, Mr. Ebi Egbe,

Mr Charles Chidozie and Uche Agumu.”

Onwunali disclosed that the NDLEA, POCACOV and other resource persons will lecture the public on the dangers of drug abuse and other vices at the event.
