Taiwo Awoniyi has cited his strong work ethic and dedication on the field of play as the reasons for his first call-up to the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic.

After being snubbed a number of times in the past, the former Nigeria junior international, who has been in fine form in the opening weeks of the season for German Bundesliga side Union Berlin, eventually got his first call-up to the three-time African champions following an injury to Terem Moffi.

“For me it’s every player’s dream,” Awoniyi told Nigeria’s Brila FM on Wednesday, in a programme monitored by The Guardian. “Every player will be happy to be part of the Super Eagles and I am one of them.

“It’s a privilege and honour for me to be part of the team which I’m very happy about,” said the 24-year-old who has scored five goals this season in seven Bundesliga games for Union Berlin.

Asked the reason behind the form that has seen him net eight goals in 12 appearances in all competitions this season, the former Liverpool player replied: “It’s hard work and dedication but for me sometimes you work hard and don’t see the result.

“Just keep on working, be patient and God will do the rest. I’m very happy about it; to be part of the Super Eagles.”

Meanwhile, the in-form Nigerian striker has been included in the Bundesliga Team of the Week after guiding Union Berlin to a 2-1 win over his former team Mainz 05 at the Mewa Arena on Sunday.

Awoniyi scored twice in the second half to give his side a 2-1 comeback victory over their hosts.

It is the second time he would be appearing in the German topflight division’s team of the week following his brilliant start to the 2021/2022 season.
