Nigeria will take centre stage in world boxing this October as Lagos prepares to host an international fight night, the first of its kind in the country’s history.
The event, billed for Independence Day on Wednesday, 1 October, is organised by Balmoral Group Promotions in partnership with AK Promotions, led by former world champion Amir Khan. The night of contests will be broadcast live on DAZN, bringing Nigerian boxing to a global audience.
According to organisers, the showcase aims to place Nigeria firmly on the international boxing map by combining established global names with homegrown fighters. The National Sports Commission of Nigeria is backing the event.
Chief Executive of Balmoral Group Promotions, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, described the occasion as a “monumental moment” for African boxing. “We are proud to present Nigerian talent to the world while celebrating our national heritage,” he said.
Amir Khan said the Lagos showcase was about more than sporting spectacle. “It’s about inspiring a new generation and highlighting the skill and determination of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars,” he noted.
Among the headline bouts, American cruiserweight Brandon Glanton will meet Britain’s Rocky Fielding in a contest that promises to reignite old rivalries. Glanton, known for his explosive power, is seeking redemption after a narrow loss in London last year. Fielding, returning after a three-year break, views Lagos as his route back into contention in the cruiserweight division, having previously fought leading names including Canelo Álvarez and Callum Smith.
In the co-main event, Ghana’s Richard Commey, a former IBF lightweight world champion, will face Kazakhstan’s Ray Seitzhanov in what is expected to be a stern test for the veteran. British-Nigerian fighter Dan Azeez will also appear on the card, describing the chance to fight in Nigeria on Independence Day as “a dream come true.”
Other bouts will see Nigerian prospect Basit Adebayo take on Tanzania’s Tony Rashid for the WBO Africa title, while Kerem Ozman is scheduled to meet Tosin Osaigbovo in a clash of undefeated contenders. Yusuf Adeniji, another unbeaten Nigerian, will also feature.
The fight night—titled Chaos in the Ring—marks a rare convergence of international boxing and African sporting ambition. For Nigeria, it represents not only a national celebration but a chance to showcase its growing influence on the global sporting stage.
