ChessThe Sports Center of the University of Lagos will this morning host some of the best chess players in the country, who will gather to vie for honours in the monthly Chess Heights competition.

The event in three categories of Open, Ladies and Under-14 is open to everybody who feels he has what it takes to challenge the best players in the land.

According to a statement by the organisers of the tournament, some of the biggest players in Nigerian chess will be playing. “Fide Master Abimbola Osunfuyi has already announced intent of participating. He is a winner of several tournaments over the years, all across Nigeria. International Master Oladapo Adu, who was just knocked out of the chess World Cup taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he lost after gallant fight to former World Chess Champion and current world number two player, grandmaster Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, endorsed the October 3 Chess Heights Monthly event, stating that he wished that he could play but he had prior engagement outside Nigeria,” the statement said.

The statement revealed that the organisers have added a “new feature of the event where members of the public, who want to learn how to play chess can pay a token N500 and be given a one hour class for complete understanding of play with the chessmen and solid foundation for beginning play of the game. They are also welcomed to watch the gallant participants who have mastered the play of the game.”
