Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) yesterday considered and passed a bill for a law to repeal the Bendel Sports Council Law, 1967 and to enact the Edo State Sports Commission Law 2021.

The passage of the bill followed the presentation of the report of the House Standing Committee on Information, Youth and Sports at plenary.

Presenting the bill, Chairman, House Standing Committee on Information, Youth and Sports, who is also the member representing Esan North East Constituency, Mr. Francis Okiye, said some of its benefits include removing sports administration from civil service bureaucracy.

He added that the bill would also create economic development in the state, encourage private sector participation in sports development.

In his speech, Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, while underscoring the relevance of the bill, directed that it be accorded a third reading.

“Clean copies of the bill are to be forwarded to the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for his assent and to other relevant agencies,” he said.

Also at plenary, the House approved the nomination of Lady Tawakalitu Woghiren as a new replacement for Oduware Uwadiae, earlier nominated as a member of the state audit commission.

This was sequel to a letter sent to the Speaker by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki. The letter was referred to the House Committee on Rules and Business for appropriate action.

Consideration of the bill for a law to repeal the Edo State College of Nursing and midwifery law, 2015 and to enact the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences law, 2021 was slated for a later date.
