Fidelity Bank win 2016 Nigerian Bankers’ Games
Fidelity Bank at the weekend amassed the most points to become the overall winners in the 2016 Nigerian Bankers’ Games (NBGs), which ended at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Lagos.
At the competition, which featured athletics and indoor games, Fidelity Bank bagged 21 medals, including 10 gold, three silver and eight bronze medals to emerge tops of the pack.
The team also defeated 2015 finalists, First Bank, to defend their football title.
Top bankers, including Fidelity Bank’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nnamdi Okonkwo, and Barbara Harper, Head, Human Capital Development of First Bank Plc, were present to cheer their teams to victory.
The final of the football event started on a fast note, with the teams trying to gain the upper hand early on, with First Bank taking the lead in the second minute through a calmly dispatched penalty kick.
The goal served as the elixir First Bank needed to go for the kill, but they met stiff resistance from Fidelity Bank’s defenders.
However, the pendulum swung to Fidelity Bank’s favour midway into the game when the bank’s Managing Director, Nnamdi Okonkwo, left his exalted position in the stands, to direct his players on the way to the equalizer.
That seemed to do the magic, as Fidelity Bank suddenly came alive, took possession of the midfield and began an onslaught on First Bank’s half that promptly yielded the equaliser in the 76th minute through a simple tap in by Dimeji Oyefeso. In the ensuing penalty, both teams scored their initial five kicks, but Fidelity Bank won the sudden death when a First Bank player lost hgis side’s sixth kick.
