Akpororo leads Team Comedy to victory at Elegushi Peace Cup
One of Nigeria’s top comedians, Bowoto Jephthah Oluwatiseyifumi Tanimola, popularly known as Akpororo, last Friday, at the Hilario Campos mini stadium Lagos Island, led his team of comedians to claim the maiden edition of Elegushi Peace Cup football tournament, tagged 11:45 by defeating Team Music, captained by Sexy Steel 4-3 on penalties. The match had ended 1-1 in a draw at regulation time in the final match that had ex-Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi as the centre referee.
The one-day tournament was organised by Abaj Multilinks Limited to celebrate His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, on his 11th year coronation and 45th birthday.
The event began with a curtain raiser that saw Smart City defeat Team 360 3-1. In the first game of the tournament Team Music defeated Team Nollywood 3-1 on penalties, while in the second game, Team Comedy shocked Austin Eguavoen-led Team Soccer 4-2 on penalties after 1-1 at regulations time.
Interestingly, Victor Ikpeba took fans 20 years down memory lane when he crashed his penalty kick retake against the crossbar, reminiscent of his lost penalty kick against Cameroun in the 2000 AFCON final in Lagos.
The well-attended and glamorous event was spiced intermittently with music, dance and aerobic performances to entertain the royal fathers, traditional rulers, political bigwigs and captains of industry.
Some of the dignitaries, who graced the event were Oba Gbolahan Wasiu Lawal, the Oniru of Iruland, Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Senior Special Assistant on Sports to Lagos State Governor, Prince Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, and National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Samuel Ikpea, among others.
