How Ten Hag fared in United playing among the ‘big five’
Manchester United parted ways with Ten Hag after an unsuccessful spell at the Premier League giant club. He would be replaced by the interim club’s legend, Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
The Dutchman took over as Ajax’s head coach midway through the 2017/18 campaign and would lead them to the UEFA Champions League semi-final the following season.
That year, Ten Hag also claimed his first trophy as a manager, winning the league and cup double.
In January 2022, he became the fastest manager to reach 100 league wins with Ajax, achieving the feat in just 128 matches.
Ten Hag’s first season in English football was impressive. He led them to a UEFA Champions League place and ended their six-year trophy drought with the EFL Cup.
Manchester United led Ten Hag were also beaten finalists in the 2023 FA Cup final.
In his second season at Old Trafford, United finished eighth in the Premier League in 2023/24, their lowest-ever placing in the competition, but beat Man City 2-1 to win the FA Cup final.

Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well in the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.” The club said in an official statement.
