As preparations gather momentum for the landmark 5th Anniversary Edition of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup 2026, the Organising Committee has credited the tournament’s remarkable growth, rising profile, and expanding influence to the transformative sports development agenda of Ekiti State Governor,Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji.

The 2026 edition, themed “Building to Last,” is poised to reinforce the competition’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost grassroots football development platforms, dedicated to nurturing young talents and promoting youth engagement through sports.

The committee noted that the steady progress recorded by the tournament over the years reflects Governor Oyebanji’s unwavering commitment to repositioning sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, social inclusion, economic growth, and community development in Ekiti State.

Under the governor’s administration, sports development has received significant attention through strategic infrastructural investments. These include the ongoing upgrade of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium to international standards and the construction of an ultra-modern indoor sports complex, projects widely regarded as major steps toward creating a thriving sporting ecosystem in the state.

According to the committee, these interventions have not only boosted the morale of athletes and sports enthusiasts but have also provided a stronger foundation for grassroots talent discovery and development.

Sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Akintunde Oyebode, has consistently aligned with the governor’s vision through sustained sponsorship and deliberate efforts aimed at institutionalising the competition for long-term impact and continuity.

The committee described his commitment as a demonstration of a shared belief in the transformative power of sports to create opportunities for young people, curb youth restrictiveness, and build sustainable pathways for excellence and self-development.

Beyond talent discovery, the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup has evolved into a platform for broader youth engagement across Ekiti State, productively engaging hundreds of young people annually. The tournament continues to create opportunities not only for footballers, but also for coaches, referees, administrators, sports journalists, photographers, content creators, medics, and other stakeholders within the football ecosystem.

Reaffirming its commitment to excellence, the Organising Committee pledged to deliver a professionally organised, impactful, and sustainable 2026 edition that aligns with Governor Oyebanji’s broader vision for sports development and youth advancement in Ekiti State.

The committee added that the competition would continue to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for emerging talents while contributing meaningfully to the state’s sporting legacy.
