Port Harcourt quakes as Rivers, Rangers Set for NPFL Showdown

Rivers United
NPFL

Rivers United welcome reigning champions Enugu Rangers to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium this Sunday as the headline fixture of matchday 11 of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Beyond three points and bragging rights, the fixture could set the tone for who will go on to win the 2026/2027 NPFL title, with the two being top favourites.

The Pride of Rivers are seeking a third opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the table after sharing points against Barau and losing to Bendel Insurance last week.

Enugu Rangers, following their ouster from the CAF Champions League, shift their focus to the league as they look to continue their title defense.

The Nigeria Premier Football League has 10 matches on the menu this weekend from Friday to Sunday, but all eyes will be in Port Harcourt for the star fixture of the week.

Rivers United v Enugu Rangers

Venue: Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt
Kick-off: 4 p.m. (Sunday)

Rivers United are winless in their last two matches, having missed the chance to go top of the table by four points. The Pride of Rivers face off against the reigning champions, who have their attention fully focused on the league after the CAF Champions League ended.

The Pride of Rivers have dominated this encounter over the last 10 meetings with five victories compared to Rangers, who have managed just two wins.

Meanwhile, Enugu Rangers have picked up seven points away from home in four matches this season, making Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side one of the most reliable teams on the road.

The top-of-the-table showdown in Port Harcourt, with both teams joint on 17 points, will be a close contest, as both teams look to avoid dropping points in the race for the title.

The last meeting in Port Harcourt ended in a five-goal rush as the hosts claimed a 3-2 win in the round of 16 of the Federation Cup in June.

Shooting Stars v Abia Warriors

Venue: Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba
Kick-off: 4 p.m

The grass turf of the Lekan Salami Stadium will tell a tale when two Warriors collide on it for 90 minutes and more on Sunday evening.

The Oluyole Warriors are desperate for a firm response in front of their fans against Abia Warriors after dropping points from a winning position in the Southwest Derby last Sunday.

Shooting Stars have won their last three home matches against Abia Warriors and will hope to continue the run given Abia Warriors’ recent winless run of four matches.

However, Imama Amapakabo’s troops are quite tricky as they got a win the last time they played a Southwest team away from home.

Enyimba v Kun Khalifa

Venue: Enyimba International Stadium, Aba
Kick-off: 4 p.m. (Sunday)

The Aba Elephant have endured a topsy-turvy start to the season. Emmanuel Deutsch’s side are winless in three games heading into the derby against Kun Khalifa.

Kun Khalifa come into the tie with confidence, with two wins in three matches, the latest a slim win over rock-bottom Inter Lagos last week.

Enyimba haven’t beaten the visitors in two meetings and are desperate for a win, which could see them move away from the drop zone, as they currently sit 19th with eight points from 10 matches.

Kun Khalifa are floating above the relegation zone. The Owerri-based club has managed 12 points from 10 matches and is 16th.

Kano Pillars v Nasarawa United

Venue: Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofa Mata
Kick-off: 4 p.m. (Sunday)

Masu Gida are up against the most in-form team currently in the league in the Northern Derby. Kano Pillars have been struggling over the last few weeks with a win in seven matches.

Nasarawa United are in top form with four wins in their last five matches as they are currently joint on points with Rivers United and Enugu Rangers. The Solid Miners have been unearthing maximum points in their matches. last few games, they head to Kano with confidence.

However, their last visit ended 3-0, and the hosts will draw inspiration from it heading into the Derby on Sunday.

A win for Kano Pillars could see them move into the top four, while a draw or loss could see them drop into the bottom half of the table.

Nasarawa United are third on the log and could top the table with a famous win in Kano and a draw between Rivers United and the reigning champions.
