Fury v Joshua: Gypsy King wants Trump at ringside

Joshua and Fury blockbuster showdown beckons

Tyson Fury is known for making his fights a spectacle even before the bell for the first round rings, writes James Mclean for givemesport.com. His entrances are anything but subtle, often with plenty of pyro and song to get everyone in attendance and watching at home warmed up for the fight.

It seems that Fury is making similar plans for the biggest fight in British history when he takes on fellow Brit and former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on December 11.

However, this time, The Gypsy King could be in for a bit of backlash, not something he’s not used to, as his latest plan involves the appearance of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

After years of waiting, thanks to the stubbornness of the fighters and promoters, including a couple of unfortunately timed losses for the combatants, the superfight between Fury and Joshua looks like it will finally happen, and in the United Kingdom.

Fury has made no secret that he will try and get the biggest payday he can for a certain fight, even if it means the clash does not happen. Hence why, when the fight was initially rumoured to be taking place in the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York, he was quite eager to sign on the dotted line, knowing a fight in such a location would bring a hefty paycheck.

However, Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn kept insisting that the fight had to happen on British shores or not at all. So much so that AJ even took a massive pay cut for the bout to happen in the UK.

Eventually, the near-74,000-capacity stadium in the Welsh capital was chosen to play host.

Regardless of where a fight happens, Fury often generates a lot of atmosphere thanks to his extravagant ring walks.

In 2020, in his rematch with Deontay Wilder, in which he would inflict The Bronze Bomber’s first defeat to win the WBC title, he came out in a robe and crown on a throne at the MGM Grand, and in the trilogy bout in 2021, he dressed up as a Spartan warrior to the tune of “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC.

In his defence of the WBC belt against Dillian Whyte in early 2022 at Wembley Stadium, Fury combined “American Pie”, “Jerusalem”, and “Your Sex Is On Fire”, along with his ring gear that was inspired by the English flag. It was no different in his fights with Oleksandr Usyk either. In the first, in May 2024, he chose “Holding Out For A Hero”, and opened with “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in his December rematch with the Ukrainian.

For the megafight with Joshua, Fury’s up to his old tricks again, but this time he’s putting his reputation for his actions outside the ring on the line, and he’s made an offer to Trump to be alongside him when he makes his ring walk in December.

“I’ll definitely make that offer to my old buddy, and we’ll see if he’s available. It’s probably unlikely because of the situation he’s in at the moment, being the President of the United States.”

What Fury is pointing to in the last comment is that Trump has enough on his plate with the mid-term elections coming in November and the continuous conflict in the Middle East, and with the fight no longer happening in the United States, the 38-year-old is probably correct in saying the likelihood of it happening is quite low.
