Honeywell seeks government support for basketball
Managing Director, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, Mr. Lanre Jaiyeola, has solicited government continuous support for basketball, saying private initiative in this sector is not enough to take the sport to its desired level.
Jaiyeola, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the Honeywell-sponsored Youth Alive Community Basketball competition, which took place at the Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos, at the weekend, predicted a brighter future for the sport going by the performance of kid players in the tourney.
Describing the competition as a huge success, he said the game would improve tremendously if government gave it proper attention. He was highly impressed at the performance of the kids, saying it gives hope that there is a brighter future for basketball in Nigeria.
“In efforts to make the society feel our impacts, we have made basketball a choice, not just to discover talents, but also to build talents. Beyond that, it is also to remove the youths from the streets, from social vices and make them have a direction to realize a dream by building a career”, he said.
According to him, Honeywell will continue to support good causes, especially those that have to do with grassroots development in sports.
“At Honeywell Flour Mills, we are socially responsible. The company will try to support any good cause within our available resources, laudable causes that can take our country forward, help to develop our children in the area of sports, in academics”, he said.
