Lagos Island Rugby FC debuts with Sanwo-Olu inauguration tourney

The Nigerian Rugby scene will witness the entrant of a new Club based within the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. Known as Lagos Island Rugby Football Club a.k.a ‘The Islanders,’ the club will be launched on July 6 at the Campos Mini Stadium with an event tagged Governor’s Rugby Cup.

According to the promoters of the club, the Governor’s Rugby Cup is one of the new club’s contribution to the celebration/ inauguration of the new Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

The new club is the baby of Mr. Larinde Williams, a politician from the community, who has decided to use the beautiful game to impact positively on the lives of the citizenry and in particular the youths of his constituency.

Part of the event is a specially organised rugby match between the Governor’s Rugby Select XV Team and the new club, Lagos Island RFC.

Speaking on the club, Larinde Williams said, “I am so passionate about the game of Rugby and my constituency that I have decided to give back to society by establishing the Lagos Island Rugby Club and a Catch Them Young programme in schools.”

“We have enlisted the assistance of a Rugby development guru in Nigeria with much experience who is popularly called ‘Mr Rugby’ – Ntiense Williams to help lay a good foundation for this futuristic rugby and community development programme for the restless young people in my constituency.”

Amongst other dignitaries expected to grace the occasion are governor-elect of Lagos State, Sanwo-Olu, notable politicians from the State and Lagos Island constituency, Lagos State Sports top officers led by Kweku Tandoh, the Lagos State Rugby Association board and the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF).
