Lagos tops South West Zonal Elimination for youth games

Team Lagos at the weekend won the National Youth Games’ South West Zonal Elimination held at the Ilaji Sports Resort in Oyo State. The event qualifies teams for the sixth National Youth Games billed for Ilorin from October 10 to 20.

Team Lagos at the weekend won the National Youth Games’ South West Zonal Elimination held at the Ilaji Sports Resort in Oyo State. The event qualifies teams for the sixth National Youth Games billed for Ilorin from October 10 to 20.

Team Oyo came second by qualifying for four team sports ahead of Team Osun, which placed third with two sports and Team Ogun fourth also with two sports.

The Lagos contingent will compete in the men’s handball, hockey and rugby, while their women counterpart will contest in football, volleyball and handball.

Oyo State will appear in men’s volleyball and cricket, while their women team will feature in hockey and beach volleyball.

Osun State won the men’s football ticket, while their women will line up in basketball. Team Ekiti will represent the zone in men’s beach volleyball and their women in the cream cricket.

Speaking on the exploits of the team at the South West Zonal Elimination, Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Bolowotan, said: “The result at the zonal elimination in Ibadan is not a bad one. We are happy with what we have achieved. For the National Youth Games proper in Ilorin, we are ready and we just need to improve on all the sports we will take part in,” he stated.

It will be recalled that Team Lagos finished second at the fifth edition of the games held Ilorin, Kwara State in 2019.
