Mikel an injury doubt for match against Indomitable Lions
Super Eagles Captain, Mikel Obi may not be fit enough for the round of 16 match of the Africa Cup of Nations against Cameroun. Mikel limped out of Nigeria’s 0-2 defeat by Madagascar on Sunday and camp sources said he has not been able to move freely since then.
Yesterday, Coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that Mikel’s situation was dicey ahead of the clash against perennial rivals, Cameroun. The former Chelsea star, who recently signed a two-year deal with Trabzonspor where he will join his compatriots including Ogenyi Onazi, Anthony Nwaekeme and Henry Onyekuru next season, would be replaced by Alex Iwobi in the playmaking position against Cameroun on Saturday.
Also in doubt for Saturday’s match is defender Jamiu Collins, who has not featured since the opening match against Burundi. Cameroun finished second in Group F after being held to a goalless draw by Benin. Before then, the Clarence Seedorf’s side were in prime position to top the group but could not break down Benin’s defence.
The match started quickly, with Benin’s David Djigla having a shot blocked and Karl Toko Ekambi sending a close-range effort over the bar for Cameroon inside the first five minutes. After the initial momentum, Cameroon had the majority of chances in the first half but were unable to find the net.Cameroon started the second half brightly, with Pierre Kunde having two shots inside the first five minutes. However, despite failing to break the deadlock, both sides managed to progress into the knockout stages.
