The Chairman of the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, Yemi Idowu, has called for reforms in youth football development in Nigeria, urging stakeholders to focus on player development, proper nutrition and the creation of a fair system that allows young talents to thrive.
Idowu made the call at the grand finale of the fourth edition of the 1XCup, which ended with Tonic Football Club of Ikorodu defeating Young Strikers Football Club of Lagos Island on penalties to emerge champions.
Speaking on the state of grassroots football in the country, Idowu stressed the need for a change in attitude towards nurturing young players, noting that talent alone is not enough for success.
According to him, young footballers require the right environment, opportunities and support systems to maximise their potential. He also highlighted the importance of nutrition, describing it as a fundamental aspect of youth development that is often overlooked.
The football administrator further acknowledged the role of the media in promoting grassroots football and helping young players gain visibility.
On the issue of age cheating, a challenge that has continued to affect youth competitions across the country, Idowu called for the establishment of a system that accommodates players at all levels while ensuring fair competition.
“We must create a structure that allows talented players to develop without compromising the opportunities available to genuine youth players,” he said.
Idowu also applauded the organisers of the 1XCup for the successful organisation of the competition, describing it as one of the country’s leading grassroots football tournaments.
The Nath Boys FC proprietor, who attended the final as the Special Guest of Honour at the Inspire Sports Arena, Cappa, Oshodi, said the yearly competition provides clubs and academies with a platform to showcase their players and gain exposure.
“This is something that should make all of us proud. I have always supported initiatives involving children and young people because they create opportunities and inspire dreams,” Idowu said.
He added that the tournament has the potential to become a major fixture on Lagos State’s sporting calendar, inspiring young footballers to pursue their dreams and compete at the highest level.
Idowu further praised the tournament organisers for hosting all matches at one venue, noting that the arrangement improved organisation and reduced logistical challenges for participating teams. He also commended the financial support extended to clubs during the competition.
On football development in Nigeria, he stressed the need for greater investment in quality sports infrastructure. He cited the New Maracana Stadium in Tolu, Ajegunle, as a model that has positively impacted schools and football academies, urging the replication of similar facilities across Lagos State to create more opportunities for young athletes and drive sustainable sports development.
