Fans of Nigeria’s top footballing talent certainly fall into this category, too. Some of the EPL’s biggest stars were born and raised here, and we feel now is a great time to celebrate some of the most talented diaspora to have taken on the top of the English leagues, a topic that regularly comes up alongside live-zoom football betting discussions among fans.

Nwankwo Kanu

Kanu is undoubtedly not just one of the best Nigerian exports to the EPL, but one of the best African players in the league from the past 30 years. Born in Owerri, the centre-forward transferred from Inter to Arsenal in the late 90s, where he would stay until 2004. He played more than 15,000 minutes on the pitch in the EPL, and scored 44 Premier League goals for the Gunners across his career.

He’s also a multi-award winner, having been named African Footballer of the Year twice, and was part of the Nigerian squad that won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games.

It’s hard to imagine talking about generational football talent from Nigeria without even considering Kanu, and he remains connected to the game, currently acting as Chairman at Enyimba Aba.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu is another Nigerian name impossible to pass over when considering EPL talent from the past three decades. He is still the highest-scoring Nigerian player in the league’s history, with a staggering 95 goals, compared to Kanu’s 54, who is in second place. Add in 26 assists across a commanding 252 appearances, and you have one of the most entertaining players of his era.

What’s more, Yakubu certainly played at his fair share of English clubs. The attacking centre-forward played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, Reading, and Coventry between 2003 and 2017. He’s still in the industry, too, now working as a football agent scouting new talent.

John Obi Mikel

Mikel’s time in the EPL is notable for several reasons. The midfielder was an absolute tour de force for Chelsea from the 2006-07 season to 2015-16, playing exclusively for the club across a decade. He played 249 matches for the side, making him one of the most prolific Nigerian players in the league’s history, and certainly for Chelsea.

What’s equally impressive is that he received no red cards between the 2008-09 season and 2015-16! He only scored one goal for the club during 2013-14, but the club relied on his midfield presence for a long time.

As you can see, many Nigerian players have made their mark on the EPL over the decades, and that’s a cycle unlikely to change in future seasons to come.
