Like they did 24 years ago, South Africa won the bronze medal match on Saturday night in Cote d’Ivoire. They played goalless with DR Congo but prevailed 6-5 in the ensuing penalty shoot-out, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerging as the hero again. Williams had saved Bafana Bafana in their quarterfinal match by saving four penalty kicks against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.

Speaking after clinching the third-place final in Abidjan, Broos heaped praises on his players, saying they showed great mentality.

“I said after our semifinal match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria that I was proud of this team, and I think today people can see why I say I am proud of this team.

“We were not fresh but when you see the mentality in that group, it is impressive. The boys did very well. They showed great mentality. I am glad we won this third-place match.”
