Super Falcons line Ghana, Portugal friendlies

The Super Falcons have lined up two international friendlies against Portugal and Ghana ahead of the 2025 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled for Morocco, reports soccernet.ng.

The two games are the Super Falcons’ final test games ahead of the championship billed to kick off on July 6. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier revealed that the nine-time African champions will face Portugal on June 23.

Quoting Super Falcons’ interim head coach, Justine Madugu, the report said that Nigeria will lock horns with West African rivals, Ghana, in a second test match in Morocco a few days before the tournament kicks off.

The fixtures are part of a carefully planned build-up programme, which also includes a 2-0 victory over Cameroon earlier this month, in Ogun State. The Falcons are expected to hold their pre-tournament training camp in Portugal before relocating to Morocco.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group B for the tournament and will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. The Super Falcons’ opening match is scheduled for July 6 against Tunisia at the iconic Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

The Super Falcons, who last lifted the continental trophy in 2018, will rely on a strong blend of seasoned internationals and emerging talents as they bid to reclaim the title.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Black Queens have commenced their WAFCON preparations in Benslimane, Morocco. They are placed in Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

With a challenging group and rising competition across the continent, Nigeria’s warm-up games against top-tier opposition are expected to be crucial in fine-tuning their tactical setup and boosting morale ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested tournament.

Aside Nigeria, only Equatorial Guinea (two titles) and South Africa (reigning champions) have won the WAFCON trophy.
