After scoring his eighth league goal of the 2021/2022 German Bundesliga season in Union Berlin’s 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin, Taiwo Awoniyi has now set a new personal scoring record in a league season.

Awoniyi has now scored eight goals in 12 Bundesliga appearances this term, surpassing his best scoring record in a league season, which was previously seven goals.

His last league goal came on October 24 in a 1-1 draw at Stuttgart.

In the 2018/2019 campaign, the Nigeria international scored seven goals in nine appearances for Belgian topflight outfit Royal Excel Mouscron. He also scored seven league goals from 27 outings for the same team in the 2017/2018 season.

On Saturday, with an eighth-minute goal in his side’s 2-0 win over their city rivals at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, the 24-year-old got Union Berlin off to a flying start.

After Awoniyi took advantage of a defensive blunder to power his shot into the left-hand corner, the Iron Ones did not waste time stretching their lead as Christopher Trimmel, on the half-hour mark, doubled their lead with a header from Niko Giesselmann’s cross.

Union held on to their dominance after the restart as they grabbed their first league win in over a month and ended a three-game winless run in the German topflight.

Awoniyi has been in fine scoring form since his permanent transfer from Liverpool in July. A failure to secure a work permit prevented him from making a single appearance for the Premier League club.

Awoniyi will be expected to turn his attention to Thursday’s UEFA Europa Conference League when Union Berlin face Maccabi Haifa before they visit Eintracht Frankfurt for a Bundesliga match on November 28.
