The draw for the Davis Cup World Group 11 playoff featuring Nigeria and Uzbekistan will hold today at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC), Onikan, which will also host the games this weekend.
According to the organising committee, the draw, which will reveal the pairings in the two-day contest, will start by 9.00 p.m.
The Uzbekistan delegation, which arrived in Lagos on Sunday, and their Nigerian counterparts have been training at the LLTC in preparation for the matches expected to draw many tennis enthusiasts to the iconic stands of the prestigious club.
However, the organisers say that despite the interest shown by many tennis faithful, tickets sells have been poor with just a day to the competition.
To further sensitise Lagosians to the event, the Marketing, Media and Communication Committee of the Local Organizing Committee, on Wednesday, began a campaign, which included the distribution of fliers to corporate bodies and selected higher institutions and private secondary schools in Lekki/Victoria Island and Ikeja axis.
The campaign, which featured some ball hitters/boys in t-shirt and Davis Cup face caps, according to the LOC Committee members, is aimed at sensitizing the public to the efforts of the Nigerian team to bring honours to the country.
A member of the organising committee, Kunle Oyekanmi, told The Guardian that demand for tickets has been low despite the massive publicity the committee has put into it.
“We are sure that many people will come for the matches and probably want to purchase tickets at the gates.
“To take care of a situation like that, we will be at the gates with POS machines to serve the fans.”
Nigeria is preparing five players for the competition, while Uzbekistan have selected four players, including a playing captain.
In the Nigerian team are Daniel Adeleye, Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel, Uchenna Oparaoji and Yusuf Abubakar. They are led by Coach Benson Ishicheli, who has promised Nigerians that his boys are set for the battle that will relaunch the country into the main stream of world tennis.
