Nasarawa United Football Club’s 16-year-old right winger cum wingback, Kabir Balogun, showcased his immense talent on Monday, playing a pivotal role in his team’s dominant 3-0 victory over visiting Yobe Desert Stars FC. The delayed league match, a 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 7 fixture, took place at the Lafia Township Stadium.

Born on February 15, 2002, in Ilorin, Kabir Balogun was instrumental in securing the win as he had a hand in all the goals scored by the Lafia-based hosts. The first half remained quiet until the 33rd minute when Balogun demonstrated his playmaking abilities. He skillfully released Abubakar Sadiq, who blasted the ball home from close range, putting Nasarawa United in the lead.

Just four minutes later, the wonderkid was once again at the center of the action. Displaying his exceptional dribbling skills, he beat two Yobe Desert Stars defenders before setting up Thomas Zenke, who calmly slotted the ball into the net, doubling the advantage for the home side.

In the second half, the game grew more intense, with both teams striving to control possession. However, Balogun sealed his remarkable performance in the 77th minute. In a brilliant solo effort, he faced off with the Yobe Stars goalkeeper and expertly lifted the ball over him, making it 3-0 and capping off a spectacular display.

Mohammed Baba-Ganaru, the Head Coach of Yobe Stars FC, attributed the defeat to the contrasting weather conditions and his players’ sluggish start. “No, it was not fatigue. We arrived very early and rested well. I think it was the weather. In the far north, it is very cold now, and when we came here, it was very hot. We started the game very casually, especially in the first half. Though we did better in the second half,” he noted.

On the other hand, Kabiru Dogo, Head Coach of Nasarawa United, praised his team’s improved performance, especially in goal scoring, which had been an area of concern. “Performances have improved since our poor start with a home loss. Today, at least there is an improvement in goal scoring. I am very happy with the result,” Dogo remarked.

Kabiru Balogun expressed pride in his performance and the team’s efforts, emphasizing their adherence to the coach’s instructions. “I am very proud of how we played today. This win is a result of following the coach’s instructions. I hope we can maintain this discipline in our next match. I want everyone to improve their game so our team can be at the top,” Balogun said.

Nasarawa United is set to face Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna in their next fixture, while Yobe Stars will host Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt in Damaturu.
