Born again – Part 33
Salvation/Spiritual Rebirth Cannot Be Inherited From Parents Cont.
49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” (Mat 12:49-50)
Jesus was not denying His responsibility to His earthly family. On the contrary, He criticised the religious leaders for not following the Old Testament command to honour their parents (15:1-9). He provided for His mother’s security as He hung on the cross (John 19:25-27). His mother and brothers were present in the upper room at Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Instead, Jesus was pointing out that spiritual relationships are as binding as physical ones, and He was paving the way for a new community of believers (the universal church), our spiritual family.
“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.” (Ps 27:10)
Many have had the sad experience of being forsaken by father or mother. Broken homes, differences of belief, addiction to drugs or alcohol, and even psychological isolation can leave children crippled by this loss. Even as adults, the pain may linger. God can take that place in our life, fill that void, and heal that hurt. He can direct us to adults who may take the role of father or mother for us. His love is sufficient for all our needs.
