(4.6) Read Mat 26:6-13. Anointing of Jesus at Bethany
“Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her,” (Mat 26:13).
“For a memorial of her.” The Lord has ordained that this story of Mary (vv. 6-13) should always accompany the preaching of the gospel. This is because she exemplifies the depth of love for Jesus that should characterise all disciples. Her act was the expression of her deep devotion to and profound love for the Master. The Christian faith is first of all a personal ministering unto the Lord Jesus Himself. We learn here that our heartfelt attachment to and love for Jesus is the most valuable aspect of our relationship to Him (see John 21:15, note above).
Love For Christ As “Illustrated In Song Of Solomon (3.10)
Song of Solomon is a book inspired by the Holy Spirit to underscore the divine origin of the joy and dignity of human love in marriage, which preceded the fall of humankind into sin (Gen 2:18-25). In Song of Solomon 6:3, the girl said that she and her lover belonged to each other—they had given themselves to each other unreservedly.
The book is also a prophetic allegory describing the love relationship between God and Israel, or the mutual holy passion and love of Christ as the bridegroom and His bride, the church. The Song may be viewed as illustrating the quality of love that exists between Christ and His bride, the church. It is an exclusive, committed and intensely personal love that allows for no other courtships. Therefore, the love believers have for Christ is propelled by the Spirit of Christ —the Holy Spirit—that dwells inside us, is a desire for His presence and fellowship like that of a lovesick bride longing for the companionship of her bridegroom. In Eph 5:27 Jesus presents “it” (the church) to Himself. This language identifies the church as Jesus’ bride.
Therefore, believers must have a personal heartfelt love for and devotion to Jesus. We must have a desire for His presence and fellowship like that of a lovesick bride longing for the companionship of her bridegroom
(4.7) God is a jealous God
“(For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),” Ex 34:14. Also read: Ex 20:5; Dt 4:24; Is 42:8.
“Jealous God.” God is a “jealous God” in that He will not tolerate unfaithfulness (i.e., the worship of other gods) on the part of His people (v. 23). This type of jealousy is holy and righteous. Likewise, in the marriage union, there should be a holy jealousy that guards the affection and love of one spouse for the other.
