Attracting the presence of God

Rev. Olusola Idowu

The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest (Exodus 33:14).

At a point in their journey to the Promised Land, the Israelites committed a very grievous sin against God. They prevailed on Aaron to mould a golden calf to take the place of God because Moses stayed too long on the Mountain where he had gone to receive the tablets of the Law. As a result, the Lord declared that He would no longer go with them, so as not to consume them. He said He would send His angel with them. Moses and the people were sad and did all they could to appease God. Moses eventually succeeded in attracting the Divine Presence, as the Lord declared that His Presence would go with Moses and the entire congregation. What is this presence of God all about? Why were the Israelites disturbed when God said He would withdraw His Presence? Why did Moses take his time to win back this presence before leaving that point? Note these three truths about His Presence.

1. The Presence of God is His Personality – Exodus 33:14. This is better expressed by the New Living Translation of the Bible, which says “The Lord replied, ‘I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest – everything will be fine for you.” When the Presence of God is with us, it means that He is personally with us. It is really unfortunate these days to hear people praying that one angel or another should be with them or go with them. Moses and the Israelites in the Old Testament era realised that this was not sufficient, so they seriously pleaded that the Presence of God would go with them. They knew that surely there were many limitations of any angel since he is only a messenger. But God is God, and He is not in any way limited. It is really heart-warming to note that His Personality is still with us as Jesus Christ declared, “I am with always to the end of age” (see Matthew 28:20).

2. The Presence of God is His Power – Exodus 33:14. This Truth is expressed by God in the phrase “I WILL.” This requires an exertion of power. In fact, I am sure this is paramount in the hearts of Moses and all the people of Israel. They were more interested in the manifestation of the Power of God. Really, every time we talk about the Presence of God in the Old Testament, it is more of the manifestation of the Power of God. This is better seen in the Ark of Covenant, which symbolises the Presence of God. Every time the Ark of Covenant was needed, it was the manifestation of the Power of God that the people thirsted for. This Power of God manifests in various ways to the blessing of His people. It is wonderful to note that in Matthew 28:18-20, we see Power and Presence related as Jesus Christ declared that all power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him.

3. The Presence of God is His Peace – Exodus 33:14. The Lord told Moses that He would personally go with him and the Israelites and He will give them REST and everything will be fine. This is surely a reference to Peace. We need to know that the Presence of God does not mean absence of challenges of life. But, in the face of these challenges of life, the Lord will give us rest and make everything fine at the conclusion of the whole matter. We are reminded of the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ with the disciples in the boat and how they were attacked by a Strong wind. The Personality of the Lord in the boat brought about the manifestation of the Power of God that led to the Peace of mind for the disciples (Mark 4:35-41). It is wonderful to note that Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace and that His Peace is different from the peace of the world. He gives us His Peace by His zeal (see Isaiah 9:6-7; John 14:27). We enjoy Peace when His Presence is truly with us.

Do you desire His Presence? Then, I encourage you to invite the Lord into your life as well as to your situations. At such a time like this, in our nation, Nigeria, we also need His Presence. However, for us to attract the Presence of God we must TURN to Him; we must ACKNOWLEDGE His Supremacy; and we must REALISE our need for Him. It is only then you can attract the Presence of God. Yes, the Presence of God is everywhere and it is promised to everyone, but not everyone enjoys it. Take the right step today and you will be glad you did.
