How to overcome evil – Part 2
“Why do you notice the small piece of dust that is in your friend’s eye, but don’t notice the big piece of wood that is in yours?
Why do you say to your friend, ‘Let me take that piece of dust out of your eye’? Look at yourself first! You still have that big piece of wood in your own eye. What a hypocrite you are! First, take the wood out of your own eye.
Then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your friend’s eye. (Matt 7:1-5) ETR VERSION
ONLY those who believe they were saved by grace will be able to give out grace to others. Those who know they don’t deserve forgiveness yet were forgiven unconditionally will forgive all those who offend them.
Those who believe they were saved by their own holiness and good works will always demand same from others instead of being gracious and forgiving. It is deemed “pride” not to forgive those who offend us when they ask for forgiveness. Religious people pray that their enemies should die.
Jesus said those who condemn others have a log in their eyes, yet they claim to see the small pieces of dust in other people’s eyes.
If you can remove the log of self-righteousness from your eyes, you will see that the wrong doings of others will look as small as a dust.
It will be easier to forgive when you know that you were forgiven unconditionally by God through Christ.
Judging and condemning people is a wrong way to treat them and the reason for this is because we have a distorted view about others.
God wants us to be like Him. Only when we see people the way God sees them can we treat them the way He want us to.
Not treating people by grace shows that we have not truly accepted the grace of God as the only way to become acceptable to Him. You cannot give out what you don’t have!
Jesus when comparing people who judge others with those they judge said, it’s like having a big tree growing in your eyes compared to just a little dust in someone else’s eyes. When we condemn others, we have already condemned ourselves. The same measure we use shall be used for us.
There are only two types of measures; the measure of self-righteousness and that of grace and mercy.
If you use the measure of self-righteousness to judge others that same measure will be used for you. And if you use the measure of grace and mercy while dealing with others, same shall be used for you.
Once you have given up on justifying yourself by your good deeds and solely on the grace of God, it will be easier to deal with others by grace. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world. Just like light overcome darkness by shinning forth, we overcome evil with good!
