Understanding righteousness

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.” NLT
(Rom 10:9-10)

Righteousness is the most misunderstood subject in the Bible. Lack of understanding of what righteousness is and what privileges it gives to believers put more Christians in bondage than other things. Too often, we associate righteousness with good works. The Bible teaches good works and right conduct of course, but all of our good works and right conducts will never make us righteous. If good works make us righteous, we wouldn’t need Jesus. Righteousness is not being refined or civilized. It is not morality or good behaviour.

Another fallacy about righteousness is that we believe we have to grow into some kind of high “spiritual state” in order to be righteous. It doesn’t come by being a member of a denomination. Well, we thank God we can grow in Him. We can grow spiritually, but we can’t grow in righteousness. You can grow in the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, long-suffering, gentleness, etc.

When you become born again, you become righteous. You will never be any more righteous, when you get to heaven than you are right now- this very moment.

How does a man become righteous?
He believes unto righteousness- because he believes on Him who is our righteousness- Jesus Christ!
Righteousness Is A Gift

“For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.” (Rom 5:17) NIV.

There is nothing a man can do to become righteous in the sight of God. We only receive righteousness as a gift from God, when we put our faith on the finished work of Christ on the cross. Those who are newly born into God’s kingdom are righteous in the sight of God, as much as older saints, who have been born again and living for God over twenty or thirty years. Those newly born again can get their prayers answered as much as the older saints. You will not be able to access and enjoy God’s grace without you understanding righteousness.

Righteousness is right standing with God. This is what gives us boldness to come before God without any sense of condemnation or inferiority. We have the boldness to receive all that belongs to us in Christ. Righteousness also gives us boldness to stand before the devil and exercise authority over him and his demons. We reign in life by righteousness. The good news is you are not just going to attain unto righteousness, if you are born again. You have been made righteous, even as Christ is righteous! Praise God!
