Read Jer. 29:24-32. A letter to Shemaiah: “Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his family: he shall not have anyone to dwell among this people, nor shall he see the good that I will do for My people, says the Lord, because he has taught rebellion against the Lord,” Jer 29:32.

Although we often suffer from the effects of sins committed by those who came before us, God does not punish us for someone else’s sins, and we cannot use their mistakes as an excuse for our sins. Each person is accountable to God for his or her actions.
