Total harps on renewable energy future for Nigeria

DETERMINED to prepare a renewable energy future for Nigeria in the wake of global concerns, Total Nigeria Plc, has insisted on the need to equip the children on the need to adopt solar energy technology for sustainable power supply.

The company, which was a major sponsor of the recently held Children’s Day celebration in Lagos, believed that Nigeria has to incorporate the children and youths in its quest to a renewable energy future.

The Solar Service Manager, Marketing Division, Total, Mrs. Eleogu Tobechukwu, said the company has taken the lead and would continue in that trend, as it plans to launch a new Solar for home scheme, after it introduced Awango lamp some years ago.

According to her, Total has commenced a pilot scheme to test the product and observe consumers’ reaction, before a complete rollout.

“We are committed to better energy, we are looking at providing sustainable solutions to power and that is Awango, some other solar solutions are also coming on board such as ‘Solar for Homes’ and we are also powering our stations with renewable energy via solar.

On the solar home solutions, she said, “It is a hybrid solution trying to take away your cost of electricity. In Nigeria now, we are lacking regular electricity supply, some places are not connected to the grid, while others that are on the grid does not have regular supply of power. It’s always good to have alternative sources, so the solar home solutions is to that rescue, just like we have in the inverter, but now energy would be generated from the sun.”

On the company’ interest in Children, she said, “Renewable energy is the future of the world, it is therefore good for the children to begin to know that this where the world is moving to and also that it is an alternative solution to power. Besides, every child requires to study and if they need to read at night, they need Awango to study. It is very healthy and environmental friendly. Part of our commitment is to educate Nigerian s about renewable energy, so we have been doing this across board including in schools.”
