Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq
Director General of the proscribed National Taskforce on the Prohibition of Illegal Importation-Smuggling of Small Arms, Ammunition and Light Weapons (NATFORCE), Dr. Baba Mohammed, has said the pronouncement on the body only amounts to the transition of its name to the National Commission (NATCOM).

Mohammed, submitted, yesterday, in a statement, in Ilorin, that following the recent passage of the bill to establish the National Commission for the Coordination and Control of the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons by the Senate and the awaiting concurrence by the House of Representatives, it was clear that NATFORCE has ceased to be.

He, however, clarified that while the body had conceded to the proscription order after the recent meeting of Federal Executive Council (FEC), it had equally championed that the name should simply read NATCOM.

Mohammed noted that he supported and championed the need for NATFORCE to transit to NATCOM in line with the provision that stipulates that the functions of the body shall be in line with Article 24 of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Convention on Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons to which Nigeria is signatory, which came into force in 2009.

He said:”I hereby distanced myself from NATFORCE and all of its operations after Senate passage of the NATCOM Bill, which has now automatically changed the name NATFORCE to NATCOM.”
