Africa’s tech hubs are revolutionizing the continent’s economic landscape, fostering entrepreneurship, and driving growth. With over 618 active tech hubs, Africa has become a vibrant centre for innovation.
Nkem Nweke, a technology expert, stresses the critical role hubs play in incubating ideas and nurturing startups, saying, “Tech hubs are the new learning institutions, integral to Africa’s economic landscape. They’re harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit, driving growth, and addressing societal challenges.”
Nweke, who has over 15 years of experience in the technology sector and is an advocate for innovation, with expertise in problem framing, design sprints, and product development, however, warns that hubs’ sustainability relies heavily on external funding and support.
He added: “Governments and private sector players must invest in these ecosystems to create a stable foundation for innovation.”
A World Bank report indicates that every dollar invested in tech hubs generates $3 to $5 in economic activity. Governments can support hubs through policies, infrastructure development, funding, and collaboration with educational institutions.
“Africa’s entrepreneurial spirit can drive meaningful economic progress,” Nweke says.
“Investing in these ecosystems is not just an economic imperative; it’s a commitment to shaping a brighter future for the continent.”
With Africa’s expanding population, rising middle class, and increased digital penetration, Nweke believes countries like Nigeria are fertile ground for innovation. “Hubs positioned as dens of experimentation can have outstanding implications beyond our imagination.”
