Six commuters were injured yesterday in a road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle axis, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki, after a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number KRD 436 XF reportedly suffered brake failure.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fully loaded bus, carrying passengers and household items, lost control while in motion and overturned on the bridge.
The crash left six passengers — two men and four women — with varying degrees of injuries, with one victim sustaining a serious eye injury.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were on routine patrol in the area, arrived promptly and carried out emergency rescue operations, pulling the injured passengers from the wreckage.
Four of the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital by Good Samaritans, while operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Adekunle Division, conveyed another male victim with multiple fractures.
For urgent medical attention. One injured passenger also received immediate treatment at the scene from operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
To prevent further accidents and restore traffic flow, LASTMA officials quickly removed the crashed vehicle from the road.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and their families and wished them a speedy recovery.
He cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers, against overloading and neglecting routine vehicle maintenance, stressing the need to ensure braking systems are in good condition before embarking on trips.
Giwa also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to road safety, warning that negligence and poor vehicle maintenance would continue to attract stiff sanctions.
