President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council during the organisation’s 147th and 148th Council Sessions held in Brussels.

The President’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, President Tinubu described Adeniyi’s re-election as a historic endorsement of his visionary leadership and a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration.

The President said his recent approval of Adeniyi’s tenure extension as Comptroller-General of Customs was based on the need to sustain the ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

He noted that the overwhelming support Adeniyi received from the international customs community validates his efforts in consolidating reforms, strengthening institutional capacity, modernising customs administration and positioning the NCS among the world’s leading customs institutions.

Tinubu stated that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Service has recorded significant achievements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, border management, stakeholder engagement and technology-driven reforms.

He particularly commended the deployment of B’Odogwu, Nigeria’s indigenous customs clearance platform, describing it as a major innovation that has simplified cargo clearance processes, reduced dependence on foreign systems, improved transparency and operational efficiency, and supported the Federal Government’s drive to build a more competitive, technology-driven economy.

The President also praised the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, the expansion of non-intrusive inspection technology, strengthened inter-agency collaboration and sustained alignment of the Nigeria Customs Service with international customs standards.

According to Tinubu, Adeniyi’s unanimous re-election is both a personal achievement and a recognition of Nigeria’s increasing prominence in global customs administration.

He said Adeniyi’s leadership has been characterised by bold reforms that have strengthened border security, enhanced revenue generation, facilitated legitimate trade and modernised customs operations through indigenous innovations such as the B’Odogwu platform.

The President expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council would further strengthen international cooperation, promote secure and efficient global trade, and enhance Nigeria’s reputation within the global customs community.

Tinubu also wished the Customs boss continued wisdom, strength and success as he combines his renewed global responsibilities with the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
