Four die as bus rams into truck on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Four persons were killed yesterday, while another sustained varying degrees of injury after a bus crashed into a truck near Straight Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

Three persons were also rescued unhurt from the accident.

Involved in the crash were a Blue Mitsubishi Cabstar, with the registration number FGE 753 XA, and Ash colour HOWO Truck, with the registration number T-695 KT.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector, Afolabi Odunsi confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.

Odunsi said that a total of eight persons were involved in the crash, where four persons(all male adults) died and one male adult) sustained injuries, and three other persons were unhurt.

He said that the cause of the crash was due to Speed violation (SPV), Wrong overtaking (WOV), and fatigue on the part of the Mitsubishi driver, who was travelling at high speed and rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.

The Chief Route Commander said that the FRSC team arrived at the scene in a six-minute response time for the rescue mission after receiving the report at 0433hrs and arrived at the scene at 0439hrs.

He said that the injured victim was rescued and taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

Odunsi said that the crashed vehicles were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, especially during early-morning journeys.

Ogunjobi advised drivers to take adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible to do so, adding that they should drive with care.
