NADDC probes Abuja CNG incident, urges motorists to use certified conversion centres

National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC)

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has commenced efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding an incident involving a CNG-converted Toyota Camry at a NIPCO gas filling station on Airport Road, Abuja.

The incident, which occurred on September 13, 2026, did not result in any death or injury, according to the Council.

In a statement issued yesterday, NADDC said preliminary information indicated that the vehicle might have been fitted with an additional cylinder that was neither approved nor suitable for compressed natural gas (CNG) use.

The Council said it was working with relevant authorities to determine the facts surrounding the incident, while strengthening regulatory oversight and compliance monitoring of CNG conversion activities across the country.

NADDC stressed that CNG conversions must be undertaken at certified conversion centres using approved components and professional installation procedures.

It added that converted vehicles should undergo appropriate testing and regular maintenance in accordance with established safety and technical standards.

The Council consequently advised motorists to patronise only certified CNG conversion centres and ensure that approved components are used during the conversion process.

It also warned motorists against unauthorised modifications to CNG systems, noting that such alterations could compromise the safety and integrity of converted vehicles.

NADDC said its regulatory responsibilities include supporting the safe and orderly development of CNG mobility in Nigeria, adding that public safety remained central to its oversight of the sector.

The Council further urged Nigerians to rely on verified information regarding CNG conversion and safety, saying unverified reports should not be allowed to undermine confidence in properly certified CNG systems.
