Ogun State Government has clampdown on illegal mining activities allegedly operated by Chinese firm, CNBM at Ekurugbudu Village in Ijebu North East local council of the state.

The government had on September 9, 2026 shut down the firm temporarily, following a petition filed by the Ekurugbudu Natives Development Association(ENDA) and forwarded to the Commissioner of Environment, Ola Oresanya.

The company’s temporary closure was due to the condition of its operational activities for not keeping to certain environmental policy and rules guiding safety and survival of the people within the community.

In the petition, the association urged the government to investigate the alllegd intimidation of ENDA members and urgently conduct an environmental and regulatory compliance audit on the firm

The association also demanded that the government to take action regarding blasting, dust, noise, heavy vehicles and road damage caused by CMBN at Ekurugbudu Village and requested  remediation and safety measures for villagers.

It also called on the state government to verify all permits, and convene the ministry, company and community representatives to agree on a lawful operating framework.

However, despite the government’s order to stop operation, the company still continues its mining activities, prompting ENDA to lead officials of the Ministry of Environment to the company and the shutdown its operation due to non-compliance.

The government action resulted to allege resistance by the firm’s operation manager, Mr Wale Balogun whom with security personnel attached to the company allegedly engaged the government officials and their security officers in open confrontation.

The development however forced the ministry team led by Mr Akinwande K.S to clamp down heavily on CNBM and summoned the firm’s management to appear at the ministry office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The government officials who stormed the quarry vowed to carry out the government order until full compliance is made and agreement reached.

Following the company’s stop of operations, the ENDA also led ministry officials to inspect the severe environmental damage allegedly caused by the firm’s drilling and blasting activities, particularly the massive excavation capable of swallowing dozens of multi-storey buildings.

The government’s officials however sealed off the gate leading to the the mining site to prevent unauthorized use.
