A quiet neighbourhood in Jalingo, Taraba state, was thrown into concern in the early hours of Saturday following an attack on a warehouse in Zangon Noma, where a gateman was reportedly killed by suspected robbers who gained access to the facility and made away with motorcycles.

The incident, as observed by The Guardian, occurred behind Alhaji Yaro’s Office (AYA), close to FastTrack Hotel, an area where several commercial activities take place within the Jalingo metropolis.

The victim, whose identity had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report, was reportedly on duty at the warehouse when the assailants attacked the facility.

Sources said the suspected robbers gained entry into the premises and attacked the gateman before removing an unspecified number of motorcycles stored inside the warehouse.

The assailants reportedly fled the area after the operation, leaving the victim dead at the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the killing, including how the suspects gained access to the warehouse and the nature of the weapons allegedly used during the attack, remained unclear.

It was also not immediately established how many motorcycles were taken away or the estimated value of the items stolen.

Following the incident, operatives of the Nigeria Police recovered the victim’s remains and deposited the body at a mortuary.

The police subsequently commenced investigation into the incident, with efforts directed at identifying the perpetrators, establishing their movements and recovering the stolen motorcycles.

Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, said the command was aware of the incident and had begun efforts to apprehend those responsible.

“We are aware of the incident and efforts are on the way to track and arrest those involved,” Mshelizah said.

The police spokesperson, however, did not disclose whether any suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He also did not provide details on the number of motorcycles allegedly stolen from the warehouse.

The latest attack has generated concern among residents and business operators in Zangon Noma, with fears over the safety of commercial facilities and personnel responsible for securing them, particularly during the night.

Residents who spoke with our correspondent expressed concern over the killing, describing it as a worrying development for businesses and property owners operating within the Jalingo metropolis.

For business owners, warehouse security often depends on a combination of physical guards, perimeter protection and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

An attack on a facility,
particularly one involving the killing of a security worker, can therefore raise wider concerns about the vulnerability of commercial premises.

However, beyond the immediate incident, many details surrounding the attack remain subject to police investigation.

It is not yet clear whether the suspects monitored the warehouse before the attack, whether they acted alone or in a group, or whether the stolen motorcycles have been traced.

The command has also appealed for relevant information that could assist investigators in identifying and locating the suspects.
