Hooliganism: NPFL goes hard on erring clubs

• Deducts three points, three goals from Warri Wolves
• Abia Warriors, Katsina United also sanctioned

The EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), yesterday, descended hard on clubs, whose fans caused troubles during and after last weekend’s league matches across the country.

The most hit by the sanctions is Warri Wolves, which lost three points and three goals from their accrued points and goals as punishment for the unruly behaviour of one of their fans, who assaulted and injured a match official after their game in Ozoro against Kano Pillars.

The EuroMatch NPFL charged Warri Wolves for breaching NPFL27 Framework & Rules in their match against Kano Pillars on Sunday in which they failed to provide adequate security, thereby allowing unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas.

A yet-to-be-identified Warri Wolves’ supporter assaulted the appointed match officials after the match, resulting in the second assistant referee sustaining an injury to his nose and bleeding.

The Warri club will also pay a fine of N250,000, being compensation to the affected assistant referee, for treatment of the injury sustained during the incident.

Also sanctioned is Katsina United, accused of breaching NPFL27 Framework & Rules in their match against Plateau United on Sunday in which they failed to provide adequate security, resulting in unauthorised persons gaining access to restricted areas.

The EuroMatch NPFL accused supporters of Katsina United of encroaching into the field of play, thereby compromising the safety of players and officials.

For that breach of the match protocol, Katsina United have been fined N1 million. They will pay another N1 million fine for encroachment into the field of play.

The league body gave Katsina United 48 hours (two working days) from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.

In their case, Abia Warriors were also charged for breaching NPFL27 Framework & Rules in their Matchday 10 fixture against Niger Tornadoes on Sunday after failing to provide adequate security as agreed at the technical meeting.

An official of Abia Warriors allegedly attempted to disrupt the live broadcast of the match by harassing a crew member of the league’s broadcast partner, thereby engaging in conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

EuroMatch NPFL said: “Abia Warriors have been fined N1 million for failure to provide adequate security as agreed at the technical meeting.

“Another N2 million fine has been slammed on Abia Warriors for attempting to disrupt the live broadcast of the match.

“Abia Warriors shall also pay a fine of N250,000 as compensation to the affected crew member of the broadcast partner for treatment of the injury sustained during the incident.”

Apart from the fines, the EuroMatch NPFL suspended Abia Warriors multimedia officer, Chidera Favour Igwe, from all league activities for five matches, both home and away, for attempting to disrupt the live broadcast and harassing a crew member of the broadcast partner.

The body gave Abia Warriors 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
