Lagos Golfers Club (LGC), popularly known as the LGC 9ers, is set to host the 14th edition of its Annual Year-End and Swing Against Cancer (SWAGc) Tournament on November 28 at Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Club, Lagos.
The tournament, which will feature 72 golfers, will begin with an 8 am shotgun start, followed by a poolside lunch, cancer awareness session, prize presentation, and awards.
The event is part of the club’s corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at raising funds for cancer screening, early detection, and treatment support for underserved communities.
Through its partnership with the St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation, SWAGc supports free breast and cervical cancer screening for women in underserved communities, as well as indigent cancer patients.
In April 2026, the initiative also facilitated an inclusive cancer awareness and screening programme for persons with disabilities in Surulere, Lagos.
Over the past three years, the campaign has extended its support to the Alima Atta Oncology Centre, Run for Cure Africa and Greenforth Medic, contributing to cancer treatment, awareness and early detection programmes.
The club disclosed that SWAGc has raised more than N43 million since 2023, recording N11.6 million in 2023, N15.5 million in 2024 and N16.5 million in 2025.
Funds for this year’s edition will be generated through individual and corporate sponsorships, brand partnerships and a charity raffle, with all proceeds from the raffle dedicated to the cancer initiative.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Captain of Lagos Golfers Club, Fatumata Soukouna Coker, said the event represents an opportunity to combine sporting activities with social responsibility.
“Fourteen years on, the Year End remains our proudest day because it is where golf meets purpose. Every swing on November 28 is a swing against cancer,” she said.
Coker expressed appreciation to members, sponsors and partners for sustaining the initiative, while calling on more organisations to support the campaign.
A trustee of the club, Hector Okposo, said the initiative prioritises screening, early detection and assistance for patients who cannot afford cancer treatment.
“Cancer is beatable when it is found early. That is why SWAGc puts its money into screening, early detection and support for patients who cannot afford care,” he said.
He explained that the campaign’s name reflects the club’s belief in the power of collective action to confront the disease.
