As Lagos prepares to welcome some of Africa’s greatest football heroes for the Legends Football Game, organisers of the event have explained that it will be a historic reunion celebrating the legendary Super Eagles squads of 1994 and 1996.
The match scheduled for Sunday, November 8 at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan, Lagos, will bring together Super Eagles legends from the two celebrated squads to face a team of African Football Legends in a fitting tribute to the men who made history and inspired generations of football fans.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, yesterday, the organisers said the game will leave a lasting memory in the mind of many Nigerians and African football lovers.
The 1994 Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia before reaching the Round of 16 at their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in the United States. Two years later, Nigeria conquered the football world, winning Olympic gold at Atlanta 1996 after defeating Brazil and Argentina en route to the historic triumph.
Among the Nigerian legends expected to feature are Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal, Ben Iroha, Victor Ikpeba, Austin Eguavoen, Alloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju and Finidi George.
The African legend team includes Emmanuel Adebayor, Stephen Appiah, Rigobert Song and Alex Song, among others.
Presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with Afreximbank and CANEX, the game forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank’s flagship platform for Africa’s creative and cultural industries.
The match-day football event will feature music, dance and the Loud Urban Choir, followed by the Legends’ kick-off at 5pm, while a presentation to the heroes of 1994 and 1996 will take place after the final.
According to the organisers, the legends from different parts of Africa are expected to arrive in Lagos on November 6, ahead of a series of activities, including a mini camp with 500 young footballers and a professional photoshoot.
