Sokoto releases N900 million for scholarship payments

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved N900 million for the payment of tuition fees and upkeep allowances to students of the state studying in tertiary institutions for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 sessions.

This followed the report of the committee on the verification of students entitled to scholarship to the governor’s office. The committee, headed by Ambassador Shehu Wurno, said a 14,532 students who studying at home and abroad were verified to benefit from the scholarship scheme.

Addressing reporters in Sokoto, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Sahabi Isa Gada, said the committee’s report has standardised the list of students under government scholarship and only verified students would benefit from the payments.

He said the ministry had already set up a contact team to ensure smooth payment of the students without delay. “The report indicates that N688 million, being registration and upkeep allowance, is being owed for the 2016/2017 academic session.
