KSA, Obey honoured at Sigma Club anniversary

Recently, Sigma Club, University of Ibadan honoured King Sunny Ade and Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi with lifetime achievement awards. The late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Sir Victor Uwaifo also received post-humous awards.
The legends received the awards at the Old Sigmites Association 70th anniversary’s dinner held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Former President General Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Nnia Nwodo, said the honoured musicians contributed tremendously to thegrowth of club’s flagship programme, Havana Carnival, which was first held in 1955.
He stated that his Royal Highness, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, was also honoured as an achiever at the University of Ibadan.
Sigma Chief, Ibrahim Olarenwaju Habeeb, said the club has evolved over the years to become a unique and enviable socio-philanthropic organisation of gentlemen.”It instills in its members, the good virtue, integrity and discipline.”
He hinted that the club has seen the graduation of over 1000 old sigmites from inception till date. These individuals cut across all geopolitical zones of Nigeria. “As I speak, we have sigmites almost in every country in the world another proof of Sigma adaptive lures,” Habeeb said.
According to him, the club has, over the years, inducted 49 honourary sigmites since 1965, when the first person was inducted.
Chairman Sigma Foundation, Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola, said the club awards scholarships to indigent students of the university to encourage their academic performance.
He noted that each of the beneficiaries is given the sum of N100,000 yearly until the completion of their undergraduate programmes.
He said: “Aside from the scholarship, the winners are also conferred with honourary membership as ‘Sigma Scholar’ of the all male club.”
Ogunmola explained that the scholarship, which covers tuition fees, accommodation and other academic expenses, would be paid into the school’s account and each beneficiary would receive the balance as cash at the beginning of each session.
