China has emerged as the most visited international destination among Nigerian travellers on Emirates’ network, overtaking the United States and the United Kingdom during the 2025 summer travel season.

In all, no fewer than 44,000 passengers flew from Nigeria on Emirates within the period, showing the continued demand for international travel among Nigerians and the country’s growing connectivity to major global destinations.

These were contained in a new passenger data release by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carrier.

According to the data, 11,530 passengers travelled from Nigeria to China between May 1 and August 31, 2025, with Guangzhou alone accounting for almost 80 per cent of all travel to mainland China.

The development revealed the growing commercial and economic ties between Nigeria and China, particularly the importance of Guangzhou as a major destination for Nigerian entrepreneurs, traders and other business travellers.

Apart from Guangzhou, other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, recorded significant traffic from Nigeria, indicating the increasingly diversified nature of Nigeria-China commercial and business relations.

While China led the destinations covered by the Emirates data, the United Kingdom and the United States also remained important long-haul markets for Nigerian travellers.

The United Kingdom, for instance, welcomed more than 5,850 Nigerian passengers during the period.

London Heathrow was the busiest UK gateway, attracting more than 2,500 passengers, representing over 43 per cent of Nigerian travellers heading to the UK.

Manchester also recorded strong demand, a pattern Emirates linked to both business travel and the large Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom.

The United States, meanwhile, attracted about 2,500 Nigerian passengers through Emirates’ network to its 11 gateways.

New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport remained the leading U.S. Gateway, accounting for almost one-third of Nigerian travellers heading to the country.

Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Boston were also among the prominent US destinations, reflecting the diverse reasons Nigerians travel to America, including business, education, tourism and family visits.

Dubai retained its position as one of the major destinations for Nigerian travellers, attracting more than 6,370 passengers during the period.

The United Arab Emirates city appealed to Nigerians travelling for shopping, leisure, business, and family holidays, while also serving as a major hub connecting destinations across the Emirates’ global network.

The report added: “Beyond the top destinations, Nigerian travellers venture farther afield through Emirates’ extensive global network. Other popular destinations included Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius, Seychelles and numerous cities across Europe. Together, these travel patterns reflect a diverse mix of business, education, tourism, religious pilgrimage and family reunions.

“One of the standout trends from Emirates’ passenger data is the growing popularity of independent travel. More than 61 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelled alone during the summer period, making solo travellers the largest travel segment.”

Families travel accounted for 17 per cent of passengers, while couples represented 12 per cent, the report said.

The figures, Emirates said, pointed to changing travel patterns and increasing confidence among Nigerians travelling independently for business, leisure, education and other purposes.
