The Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-SLUK) has vowed to proceed with its planned two-week warning strike from September 15 unless the Jigawa State Government takes concrete steps to meet its demands.

The branch chairman, Idris Chiromawa, who disclosed this in a statement obtained by The Guardian, dismissed claims by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Yusuf Chamo, that the state government received the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement only two weeks ago.

The development comes as the state government convened a stakeholders’ meeting in an effort to avert the strike.
The meeting, held last Wednesday and chaired by Chamo, was attended by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Accountant-General, Permanent Secretary of the ministry and the Vice Chancellor of the university, among others.

However, Chiromawa, who spoke with journalists at the Government House, Dutse, said the meeting failed to produce any concrete outcome.

He said the union would proceed with the warning strike if reasonable steps were not taken to address its demands before the expiration of the ultimatum.

Asked whether the strike would go ahead despite the government’s renewed efforts, Chiromawa answered in the affirmative, saying the branch had already formally notified the union’s National Secretariat of its intention to commence the action if no progress was made.

He also disputed the commissioner’s claim that the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement was received by the state government only two weeks ago.

According to him, implementation of the agreement was not a recent issue and had been brought to the attention of the state government much earlier.

“Following receipt of the agreement, the union forwarded it to the university management for the university council’s approval. At its meeting of May 21, 2026, the council considered and approved its full implementation,” he said.
