The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved three postgraduate programmes for American Open University Nigeria (A-Global), paving the way for the institution to admit its first set of master’s degree students in the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval was conveyed in a letter dated June 19, 2026, from the Office of the Executive Secretary of the NUC and signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Mr. Abubakar M. Girei.

According to the university, the approval followed a resource verification exercise conducted by an NUC panel, which assessed the institution’s human and material resources before recommending the establishment of the programmes.

The approved full-time postgraduate programmes are the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Information Technology (MIT), and Master of Public Administration (MPA).

Reacting to the development, the Founder and President of American Open University, Prof. David Akanbi, described the approval as a testament to the institution’s commitment to quality education.

“This approval is the outcome of a rigorous, independent examination of what we have built—our faculty, our facilities, our systems, and our academic governance. We are grateful to the Commission for its thoroughness and for the confidence this approval represents,” he said.

Akanbi noted that the three programmes have been designed with artificial intelligence (AI) integrated across their curricula, rather than treating AI as an optional component.

“We believe AI is not a feature to be bolted onto traditional curricula. It is a force reshaping how organisations decide, deliver, govern and compete. Our programmes are designed accordingly, with AI integrated into every course and three signature specialisations in each programme that prepare graduates to lead in the domains where AI is advancing fastest,” he said.

The MBA programme will offer specialisations in Technology Entrepreneurship, Human Capital Development, and Strategic Educational Design.

The MIT programme will feature specialisations in AI Engineering and Deployment, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, and Intelligent Learning Systems.

For the MPA, students will specialise in Digital Governance and Security, Public Health Policy and System Governance, or Strategic Public Sector Leadership.

The university said the programmes are built around its proprietary EDGE Framework—Educate, Develop, Grow and Empower—and will be delivered through a HyFlex learning model that allows students to study fully online, fully on campus, or through a combination of both.

Akanbi expressed confidence that the programmes would equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to drive AI-powered transformation across business, technology and public sector institutions.

“These are master’s programmes designed to stand alongside any in the world and to graduate global leaders. Our graduates will leave A-Global ready to lead AI-driven transformation in their organisations and communities, with the strategic tools, technical depth, professional networks and applied research capability the moment demands,” he said.

The university also announced that applications for the 2026/2027 academic session have commenced, with admission requirements and application procedures available through the Office of the Registrar and on the institution’s website.

American Open University Nigeria, also known as A-Global, is a private university licensed by the NUC. Its global campus is located in Ibadan, Oyo State, and the institution says it is focused on expanding access to career-oriented higher education through industry-aligned teaching and learning.
