The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has unveiled the successful beneficiaries of its 2020 Postgraduate Local Scholarship Scheme, with Olamiji Temilade Onafowokan emerging among outstanding Nigerian graduates selected after a rigorous nationwide screening and assessment exercise.

The Fund said the scholars were picked from a highly competitive pool of applicants across the country following a merit-based selection process that assessed academic excellence, research potential and the candidates’ capacity to contribute to Nigeria’s technological, environmental and economic development.

Onafowokan, from Ogun State, secured the prestigious scholarship to pursue a Master of Science in Statistics at the University of Ibadan, where her research focused on the application of multivariate statistical techniques to water-quality assessment and environmental decision-making.

Other successful beneficiaries announced by the PTDF include Ibrahim Musa Abdullahi of Kano State (Petroleum Engineering), Chidinma Grace Okafor of Anambra State (Chemical Engineering), Daniel Efe Omoruyi of Edo State (Environmental Management) and Aisha Bello Mohammed of Kaduna State (Geology and Geosciences), among several others selected nationwide.
According to the Fund, the 2020 scholarship exercise attracted about 27,474 applications, with candidates evaluated on academic qualifications, research proposals, programme relevance to Nigeria’s petroleum and allied sectors, statement of purpose, professional potential and overall performance during screening and document verification.

PTDF said the successful scholars distinguished themselves through exceptional academic records, clearly defined research objectives and the potential to drive innovation and national development in strategic sectors.
Among the beneficiaries, Onafowokan stood out for her impressive academic pedigree. She obtained a National Diploma in Statistics with Distinction from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, before graduating with First-Class Honours in Statistics from the University of Ibadan. She had also received the University of Ibadan Dean’s Honours Awards and the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia Scholarship.

During her postgraduate programme under the PTDF scholarship, Onafowokan conducted research on water-quality indicators using principal component and discriminant analyses, providing a quantitative framework for environmental monitoring, risk assessment and evidence-based decision-making. She completed the programme with Research Distinction.

The PTDF congratulated Onafowokan and the other successful scholars, expressing confidence that they would deploy the knowledge and expertise gained through the scholarship to strengthen Nigeria’s petroleum, energy, environmental and related sectors while advancing the country’s human-capacity development.
