The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks, with 17 elevated to the rank of Professor and another 17 becoming Associate Professors.
The promotions were ratified during the institution’s 101st Regular Meeting of the Governing Council held on July 10 and 11 under the chairmanship of Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, following favourable external assessment reports on the candidates’ scholarly publications.
A statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, said the promotions cut across several disciplines, including Community Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Religious Studies, Guidance and Counselling, Accounting, Library and Information Science, Business Administration, Physics, Parasitology and Entomology, Physiology, Crop Science, Educational Foundations, and Banking and Finance.
According to the statement, the promotions took effect in October 2025. Congratulating the beneficiaries, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, described the elevation as recognition of academic excellence, dedication and commitment to scholarship.
He said the university would continue to strengthen its internal processes to ensure the timely consideration of external assessment reports and the promotion of deserving academics in line with established guidelines.
“These promotions are not just about attaining a higher rank. They reflect our belief that hard work and dedication should be recognised and rewarded,” Fawehinmi said.
