Over 10,000 women benefit from comprehensive emergency obstetric care 

Over 10,000 women have benefited from the Federal Government’s Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care (CEmOC) programme been implemented by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
 
Besides, more than 3,000 women with complications from childbirth have received life-saving treatment across 20 centres nationwide.Director-General of the NHIA, Dr Kelechi Ohiri, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists at the National Health Financing Policy Dialogue with the theme, ‘Reimagining The Future of Health Financing in Nigeria’, said over 200 hospitals are currently participating in the programme, with more being enrolled.
 
He explained that the programme was designed to provide free care to indigent women facing pregnancy complications, ensuring that they receive timely and appropriate treatment without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses.
 
According to the NHIA, persons eligible for the CEmOC programme include poor and vulnerable women at risk of any of the following obstetric complications – pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, haemorrhage, prolonged obstructed labour, sepsis, post- abortion complications, and other conditions requiring delivery by caesarean section. 
 
The Director-General hinted that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation would speak on how the government is ensuring that every employer complies with the mandate to secure nationwide health coverage.
