Professor of Broadcast Journalism and Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago- Iwoye Ogun State, Ayodele Thomas Odunlami, will deliver the 119th inaugural lecture on August 13, 2024.
With the theme: “(Re) moving the ancient landmarks? How technology deconstructs the mass media,” chairman of the event is the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola.
In an interview with The Guardian, Odunlami said the theme of the lecture was informed by the central thread and cumulation of his research findings on modern trends and developments in journalism practice in Nigeria and globally, especially in the wake of the new media and other technological innovations.
To him, “my research goal has been to re- focus attention to the changing nature of the mass media and the implications of the emerging trends on media practice and scholarship.”
The don added communication scholars and practitioners should expect very incisive and illuminating analysis on the emerging operational and ethical dimensions including implications of the high turnover of technological interventions/ disruptions on media practice.
In conclusion, he noted, “in Africa, attention will be redirected to indigenous paradigms that could free us from the shackles of communication and media imperialism as emerging events have confirmed that we cannot win the technological catch-up game with the developed world.”
